MAY 25 – COVID-19 MP OFFICE UPDATE
May 25, 2020
SUPPORTING COMMERCIAL RENTERS
As Canadians take action in the fight against COVID-19, we know that many small businesses are worried about being able to pay rent.
In recognition of the challenges facing Canadian businesses and property owners, our Government has reached an agreement with all provinces and territories to implement the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA)
for small businesses.
This program will provide forgivable loans to commercial property owners who in turn lower the rent for their tenants by 75%.
Many landlords in Toronto Centre, and across the country, have already stepped up to offer relief to their tenants. Our Government commends their leadership. Now with the CECRA, we need even more landlords to step up to the plate and work with their tenants to get us through this challenging time. We’re all in this together, and we’re asking that landlords in Toronto Centre take advantage of this program and do their part to get us through this crisis.
Applications will be accepted through the CMHC
beginning today, and we encourage property owners to do their part and take advantage of the program.
TIPS ON STAYING SAFE AND HEALTHY
Together, we can slow the spread of COVID-19 by making a conscious effort to keep a physical distance between each other.
- avoiding nonessential gatherings
- avoiding common greetings, such as handshakes
- avoiding crowded places such as concerts, arenas, conferences and festivals
- limiting contact with people at higher risk like older adults and those in poor health
- keeping a distance of at least 2 arm lengths (approximately 2 metres) from others.
